Integrated Medication and Psychotherapy

Our specialist in psychiatry believes that the best psychiatric treatment should combine pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. Based on our client’s needs and background, the following types of psychotherapy will be offered in one session with a pharmacotherapy discussion. The psychiatrist may combine techniques of various types of psychotherapy.

Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT): CBT has two components: Cognitive therapy and Behaviour therapy. Cognitive therapy aims to help our clients identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts, while Behaviour therapy helps clients learn practical strategies to change behaviours. CBT is suitable for many psychiatric conditions, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD (adults and children), insomnia, flight phobia, eating disorders and addiction.

Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) focuses on enhancing interpersonal relationships. Our specialist in psychiatry can perform role-play and help clients identify and resolve current interpersonal issues, such as conflict, grief and life changes.  IPT is suitable for depression and personality disorders.

Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) focuses on emotion regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness skills, crisis intervention and mindfulness skills. DBT is suitable for borderline personality disorder and complex PTSD.

Attachment therapy is based on attachment theory. There are four attachment styles: Secure, Anxious (or Preoccupied), Avoidant (or Dismissive), and Disorganized (or Fearful-Avoidant). The therapy focuses on the attachment type a client had with their primary caregiver during childhood and how it influences their current relationships. Attachment therapy is effective for depression, anxiety, personality disorders, and for adults seeking greater self-understanding.

Psychodynamic therapy is the modern version of psychoanalysis. It is based on the experience of the psychiatrist to interpret the dynamics during the therapy session and analyze how the past influences the present so that the client understands themselves and prevents history from repeating. Psychodynamic therapy is suitable for depression and anxiety, personality disorders, and issues with childhood attachment.

Grief therapy is suitable for people who have lost their loved ones. Due to the nature of death and relationship to the deceased, some clients experience chronic grief. Grief therapy helps individuals cope with their loss, adapt to life without the deceased, have closure and move on to the next stage of life. Grief therapy is suitable for people who present with depression and guilt due to the loss of family members and pets.

Parent management training (PMT) is suitable for parents who have a child suffering from ADHD, conduct disorder and Internet gaming addiction.

Individual and group therapy for children will be conducted at Centre Medical Child Development Centre by our occupational therapists.

Specific therapies are also available for victims affected by another person with personality disorder, marital therapy, therapy for people undergoing divorce, LGBTQ and based on personal needs.
